Conflict And The Art Of Intervention

Few of us know how to deal with conflict effectively.  Often we avoid it altogether, inadvertently allowing problems to grow.  When finally forced to confront an issue or person directly, we frequently handle the situation clumsily at best.  Because our effectiveness as leaders and team members depends on the appropriate management of differences, we need to learn how to get comfortable with conflict -- and master proven ways to manage differences.

This one-day course provides a framework and methods for assessing and managing conflict at the personal, interpersonal, group and organizational level.  Participants will examine their personal difficulties with conflict, practice methods of communication to reduce misunderstanding and learn other techniques to manage conflict resulting from differing ideas.

Participants will also learn how to identify their own and others' styles of managing conflict, to work with differing approaches and to serve as a third-party mediator to move differences toward Win-Win solutions.  Take-away resources include tools for assessment and intervention, references and a flowchart for making decisions in any conflict situation.

Objectives:

  1. Learn to rule out misunderstanding as the source of conflict.
  2. Practice assessment of types and degree of conflict.
  3. Study your style of handling conflict and that of others.
  4. Practice the art of intervention.
  5. Practice intervention through use of ground rules and mediation.
  6. Apply learning to case study.
  7. Role play and rehearse mediating conflict with participants' difficult situations.
